CHAPTER 2 – PART 1 HORRIBLE FACTS

LEFT,OVER. received a lot of positive reactions since its launching. As I mentioned in the Chapter 1, there will be more information about this project coming up. Before I completely bringing out the idea of the project, I would like to start with some background explanation. So you will understand the reasons why I wanted to start this project so badly. Even if that means I earns no money out of it, but spending a lot of my personal time to help other people waste less food, save more money, and save earth. I am too tiny on this giant world, so I will be more than happy to do something useful like this. Hence, if you would join me and contribute some of you efforts to the project, it  will pay off my efforts of doing this whole project.

Now, let’s take a quick look what has been happening around us. Do you know how much food we waste every day, every month, or every year? In some specific developed countries, the number is ridiculous enough to feed other developing countries. It is not just a matter of wasting food, but it is matter of creating more pollutions for earth as well. So I took some examples from the internet and you will be surprised!

“According to a recent report by UNEP and the World Resources Institute (WRI), about one-third of all food produced worldwide, worth around US$1 trillion, gets lost or wasted in food production and consumption systems. Every year, consumers in industrialized countries waste almost as much food as the entire net food production of sub-Saharan Africa (222 million vs. 230 million tons). In the USA, 30-40% of the food supply is wasted, equaling more than 20 pounds of food per person per month” – UNEP

“Over 97% of food waste generated ends up in the landfill. And Food waste that goes to the landfill breaks down anaerobically and produces methane; methane is 21 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. (Environmental Protection Agency) Food loss costs a family of four at least $589.76 annually. University of Arizona” – endfoodwastenow.org

“In Ireland there is over one million tonnes of food waste disposed of each year. Around 1/3 of this comes from households and means that, at home, each person is throwing out about 80kg of food waste each year.” – stopwastefood.ie.

“Almost 50% of the total amount of food thrown away in the UK comes from our homes. We throw away 7 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes every year in the UK, andmore than half of this is food and drink we could have eaten. If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the benefit to the planet would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.”- lovefoodhatewaste.com

Another brilliant organisation is called endhunger, they have massive information with facts and grand projects they have achieved in helping waste less food.

I am surprised there are so many great organisations and people have been putting efforts to make our planet a better place to live. I know this makes my idea of LEFT,OVER. project less creative or special. What I want to say is I never want to earn a cent out of this project. The big organisations can make laws and create big campaigns to generate bigger effects than me. I don’t mind the effect of the project will be very small, but I do want to use my personal stories and experience to show my friends and other people that it is possible to live healthily without wasting that much food.

There is too much information for us to process regarding food waste, environment pollutions. So All I want from my supporters is to start from yourself. Every single individual has the power to make a big difference. I don’t want  any of you to put so much efforts or money in this project. However, If at the end, you can make the left over, then you are the best supporter for my project. Follow my blogs, I will gradually show you how easy it can be done.

The PART 2 will come up soon, which is my personal stories about saving food.
